Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) have established a foothold in Valle d'Aosta, Italy's northernmost region, as of mid-July, according to AP News and The Sun Chronicle. The invasive insects, native to North America, were photographed on vine leaves in Pont-Saint-Martin on 9 July, marking the species' presence in Italian agriculture. Valle d'Aosta's vineyard operators have begun reporting crop damage, with the beetles feeding on leaves and fruit across vineyards and orchards in the region.
The discovery comes as a warning for Emilia-Romagna, whose agricultural economy depends on protected designation of origin products—Parmigiano-Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, and Lambrusco wines among them. The beetles, which feed indiscriminately on hundreds of plant species, pose a direct threat to the region's fruit orchards and vine production should they migrate south across the Apennines.
