The pest feeds on leaves, flowers and fruit, causing visible damage to vines and trees. The insect, native to Japan, established itself in northern Italy years ago but has accelerated its range in recent seasons.
Central Italy's agricultural regions, including those dependent on apple, pear, peach and apricot production, face potential threats from the beetle's continued spread.
