The iridescent green beetles native to Japan have become a growing menace in the Valle d'Aosta, swarming through orchards and vineyards and leaving behind devastating lattice patterns in leaves that weaken the plants and reduce production, according to AP News. The Popillia japonica, or Japanese beetle, is a familiar pest in the United States, where it arrived more than a century ago, but it is a relative newcomer to Italy and represents an escalating threat to the region's agricultural economy at a moment when the Alps face compounding pressures from climate stress.
The beetles have been documented in Pont-Saint-Martin and other Valle d'Aosta communes, according to AP reporting from mid-July. Vittorio Costabloz, vice-president of the regional agricultural association, expressed frustration over the advance of the pest northward through Italian vineyards and orchards. The beetle's arrival marks a new front in the region's struggle to maintain agricultural productivity as heat, drought, and now invasive species converge on the small mountain economy that depends on viticulture, dairy, and fruit cultivation.
The Japanese beetle's presence in the Valle d'Aosta is the latest chapter in a broader invasion of northern Italy. AP News reported that the pest has been advancing through Italian vineyards and orchards for months, frustrating farmers across the Po Valley and now reaching the Alpine foothills. The beetle feeds on leaves and flowers, skeletonizing foliage and weakening plants' ability to photosynthesize and survive stress—a particular danger in a region where summer temperatures are rising and water availability is already constrained by glacial melt.
For the Valle d'Aosta, the timing is acute. The region's autonomy depends on a diversified agricultural base: wine production, apples, pears, and other stone fruits that command premium prices in European markets. Tourism—the other pillar of the regional economy—draws visitors partly on the appeal of authentic Alpine villages and their gastronomic traditions. A significant crop failure from beetle damage could depress both sectors. The beetle's arrival underscores a broader ecological vulnerability in the Alps. As the region warms, it becomes more hospitable to species that once could not survive at altitude. The Japanese beetle thrives in temperate zones and can complete multiple generations per year in warmer climates—conditions that are increasingly present in the lower valleys and foothills of the Valle d'Aosta. International climate research has warned that Alpine regions face a triple squeeze: direct heat stress on crops and forests, water scarcity from reduced snowpack and glacial retreat, and the northward migration of pests and pathogens once confined to lower latitudes. The Japanese beetle is a visible symptom of that shift.
