The Popillia japonica has begun swarming through the region's fruit-growing areas, leaving behind the characteristic lattice-pattern damage that weakens plants and cuts production. AP News reported on Monday that the beetles, native to Japan and a familiar scourge in American agriculture since the early 1900s, represent a relative newcomer to Italy and a growing threat to high-altitude cultivation. The beetles have been documented in Pont-Saint-Martin and Donnas, two of the valley's main agricultural zones, where vineyards and orchards form the backbone of the local economy.
The timing of the invasion coincides with a period of climate stress across the Alps.
