Italy's open-air tourism is experiencing a sharp acceleration this summer, according to data from Campeggi's 2026 Camping Report cited by tourism-review.com. Search activity for campgrounds and holiday resorts climbed 34 percent year-on-year, while 77 percent of booking inquiries came from travellers with children or partners—up two percentage points from 2025. The surge reflects a broader shift in European leisure habits toward flexible, outdoor accommodation as temperatures rise across the continent.
For Liguria's coastal tourism economy, the trend carries immediate weight. The region's Riviera has long competed with mass-hotel tourism in Venice and Florence, and the campground surge offers a different market segment: families seeking affordability and proximity to the sea without the congestion of urban centres. Genoa's hinterland and the Cinque Terre corridor both host established campground networks that benefit from this demand shift, particularly among visitors arriving by road through France or down the spine of Italy.
