Police recover Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse works stolen from Parma museum

Italian police have recovered three paintings by the French masters Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse that were stolen from the Fondazione Magnani Rocca museum in Mamiano di Traversetolo, near Parma, in March, according to the Guardian. The artworks are collectively valued at more than $10 million. Police released new CCTV footage of the theft on Friday, showing two masked burglars entering through a window and grabbing the paintings.

The New York Times reported that the Italian military police said the art had been found five months after being taken in a nighttime heist. Prosecutors said five people had been arrested in connection with the theft. Al Jazeera added that nine Moldovans are being investigated in connection with the crime, though it did not specify the status of all nine individuals.

Le Monde, citing the Fondazione Magnani Rocca, reported that the three paintings were worth more than €10 million combined. The recovery closes a case that had drawn international attention to the security of Italy's smaller private museums, which hold significant works but often lack the protection of major state institutions.
