Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday called “shameful” a judge's decision to dismiss accusations against a campaigner who had been arrested on terrorism charges for allegedly seeking to organise violent protests, The Local Italy reported. The remark put the head of government's view of a specific court ruling on the record in unusually direct terms.

The outlet's Thursday roundup confirmed that the alleged organiser of the Milan protests had been released from prison. The accusations and the release belong to the same case, and the city named in it is the one where this autumn's demonstrations have been concentrated.

The release lands in a season of sustained protest. The Guardian's commentary this week described “an autumn of unusual discontent” in Europe, with demonstrations running from Paris to Milan, and asked whether anger on the streets could turn against the European Union itself if cooperation fails to improve daily life.
