Deutsche Welle reported on Friday that Luca Parmitano, an Italian astronaut, will serve as lead pilot for NASA's Artemis III test flight, a mission designed to validate technology for future moon landings. The flight is expected to launch in 2027. Parmitano's selection represents a milestone in European participation in the American space programme and reflects deepening cooperation between NASA and the European Space Agency.

The assignment carries particular weight for Italy, a country with a long tradition in space exploration and a growing presence in European science and technology. Parmitano, who has flown two previous missions to the International Space Station, becomes the public face of Italian expertise in human spaceflight at a moment when the European Union is investing heavily in its own autonomous space capabilities and technological independence from the United States.
