2030 Winter Olympics drops Nordic combined as French Alps host new events

IOC replaces 102-year-old sport with synchronized figure skating and freeride skiing; gender parity cited

The International Olympic Committee's executive board has removed Nordic combined from the 2030 Winter Olympics programme, according to reporting from AP and the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. The discipline, which has competed at the Winter Games for 102 years, will be replaced by synchronized figure skating and freeride skiing and snowboard—both sports with women's and team event options that the IOC cited as advancing gender parity.

Nordic combined, which pairs cross-country skiing with ski jumping, has struggled to attract a modern Olympic audience despite its long history. The IOC's move signals a shift toward sports with broader appeal and stronger gender representation, though the decision removes one of winter sport's traditional Alpine disciplines from the Games.

For Valle d'Aosta, which sits on the Italian side of the French Alps and depends heavily on winter tourism and Alpine sports infrastructure, the decision carries mixed signals. The region's ski resorts and training facilities have long benefited from hosting or supporting Nordic combined athletes and events. The addition of freeride skiing—a discipline that emphasizes off-piste terrain and natural Alpine features—may offer new opportunities for backcountry tourism and mountain guides, though it also raises environmental questions about access to sensitive high-altitude zones.

The 2030 Games will be held in the French Alps, placing them geographically close to Valle d'Aosta's border. Cross-border tourism and shared Alpine infrastructure have historically linked the region to French Olympic preparations. However, the IOC's focus on gender parity and audience appeal suggests that traditional, male-dominated winter disciplines face pressure across the Olympic movement, a trend that may reshape how smaller Alpine regions market their sports tourism and training facilities in coming years.
