Winter Olympics 2030 adds synchro skating, freeride; drops Nordic combined

French Alps host event as IOC prioritizes gender parity and modern appeal over century-old winter sport

The International Olympic Committee's executive board has approved synchronized figure skating and freeride skiing for the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle and Greenwich Time. The decision marks a shift toward gender parity and sports with broader modern appeal. Nordic combined, which has featured in every Winter Olympics since 1924, has been dropped from the roster.

The IOC had the option to add women's and team events to Nordic combined but instead chose to eliminate the discipline entirely. According to Greenwich Time, Nordic combined has struggled to find a modern audience despite its 102-year Olympic history. Synchro skating and freeride skiing, by contrast, are expected to draw younger audiences and expand the Games' gender balance.

The French Alps location puts the 2030 Games in terrain that shares the Alpine character of Valle d'Aosta, though across the border. The decision reflects a broader IOC strategy to modernize the Winter Olympics through sports with higher visibility in social media and among younger viewers. Freeride skiing in particular aligns with the kind of backcountry and steep-slope skiing that defines much of the high-mountain tourism economy across the Alps, including the valleys and peaks of northern Italy.

The loss of Nordic combined, a discipline that combines ski jumping and cross-country racing, marks the end of a long Olympic tradition. The IOC's choice to cut rather than expand the sport signals a preference for disciplines perceived as more visually dynamic and accessible to contemporary audiences. For Alpine regions like Valle d'Aosta, which has long hosted winter sports training and competitions, the shift underscores how Olympic programming increasingly reflects global entertainment preferences rather than historical Olympic continuity.
