Parma Heist Paintings Recovered, But Heritage Security Questions Remain

Italian police have recovered three paintings by the French masters Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse, stolen from the Fondazione Magnani Rocca museum in Mamiano di Traversetolo, near Parma, in March. The artworks, collectively valued at more than $10 million, were found five months after the nighttime heist, according to the New York Times.

Police released new CCTV footage of the theft on Friday, showing two masked burglars entering through a window and grabbing the works, the Guardian reported. Five accused thieves are under arrest, CBS News confirmed, and the Italian military police said the art had been located.

The recovery closes a dramatic chapter for the private foundation, which sits in the Emilian countryside west of Bologna. But for those of us who watch the region's heritage from Florence, the case is less a triumph than a reminder of how exposed Italy's smaller collections remain.
