For Piedmont, the Po is the region's defining waterway, running through its southern provinces and feeding the irrigation systems that sustain the area's rice paddies, maize fields and vineyards, including the Barolo and Barbaresco zones. The river's decline directly threatens the agricultural economy that anchors much of the region's rural employment.

The drought arrives as forecasters warn of a sweltering Ferragosto weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 40C in parts of Italy before easing early next week, as reported by The Local Italy.
