An Early Cold Snap, and a Warning From the Stratosphere

The Guardian points to an unusually early weakening of the polar vortex, as Italian forecasts put the storms in the centre-south

The Guardian reported on Monday that forecast models suggest the stratospheric polar vortex over the northern hemisphere could weaken significantly within the next 10 days, an unusually early disruption that threatens to alter weather patterns across parts of Europe in the coming weeks. The paper's environment desk treats the timing, rather than the event itself, as the notable thing.

The same day, The Local Italy reported that a cold snap is set to grip the country, with temperatures below seasonal averages and heavy rain and strong winds expected in the centre-south on Monday. Its Rome roundup repeated storm alerts for southern Italy.

Al Jazeera, meanwhile, published surveillance footage of the moment a tornado tore through a beach resort restaurant at Castellaneta Marina, on Italy's southern coast. The network gave no casualty figures with the clip.
