Forecasters See an Early Weakening of the Polar Vortex

The Guardian reports Arctic winds may be disturbed within ten days, as Italy is told to expect below-average temperatures and southern storms

The Guardian reported on Monday that the stratospheric polar vortex over the northern hemisphere faces the prospect of an unusually early weakening. Forecast models cited by the paper suggest it could weaken significantly over the next ten days, a disruption to the winds above the Arctic that threatens to alter weather patterns across parts of the continent in the coming weeks. The paper presents the outlook as a modelling prospect rather than a settled forecast, and attaches it to no single country.

The Italian picture came the same day from The Local Italy, over a much shorter timeframe: temperatures set to drop below seasonal averages across Italy this week, with heavy rainfall and strong winds expected in the centre-south on Monday. The outlet's Monday news roundup led on storm alerts for southern Italy. Neither report presents the two forecasts as a single linked event, and the Guardian's ten-day window opens well beyond the week the Italian forecast covers.

On the southern coast, Al Jazeera published surveillance footage of the moment a tornado tore through a beach resort restaurant at Castellaneta Marina, in Puglia. The outlet described a powerful storm and made no claim that the tornado was connected to the pattern the Guardian sets out. Footage of that kind generally appears before any meteorological accounting of an individual cell is possible.
