Pope Leo XIV has issued his first encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas, addressing the ethical threats posed by artificial intelligence. According to Project Syndicate, the Pope describes the development and deployment of new AI tools as a profound threat to human dignity. The encyclical echoes the concerns of Pope Leo XIII's 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which sought to reconcile the Church with rapid industrialization. Leo XIV's choice of subject reflects the Vatican's view that ethical questions raised by technological change demand central attention from the Church.
The encyclical has generated international debate about whether the Pope's warnings go far enough. One Project Syndicate commentator argued that Leo XIV has not pressed deeply enough the question of what purpose AI is being designed to serve, suggesting that public conversation remains narrowly focused on competition between AI labs rather than on fundamental questions of human welfare. A second commentator defended the Pope's stance, saying he is right to celebrate human grandeur, reject posthumanism, and emphasize the essential difference between humans and machines.
The Vatican's intervention comes as artificial intelligence reshapes communication, information access, work distribution, and even warfare. The Pope's encyclical addresses not only the technology's capabilities but also the institutions and control mechanisms needed to steer AI toward broad-based improvements in human welfare. The timing reflects growing international concern that AI development has outpaced ethical frameworks and public understanding of the technology's implications.
