Pope Leo has voted by post in the United States midterm elections, an act the Vatican presented as that of a citizen rather than of a head of state. CBS News reported that the Vatican said Leo exercised his right as a U.S. citizen, submitting a mail-in ballot in his native Chicago ahead of the midterms next week.
The Guardian reported that it is the first time a sitting pontiff is known to have cast a ballot in any political election at any point in history. The same report notes that Leo has clashed with Donald Trump over several issues, which is the context in which the American press will read the vote whatever the Vatican's framing.
The two accounts do not contradict each other; they place the emphasis differently. The Guardian leads with the novelty, CBS with the ordinary mechanics of an absentee ballot, and between them they establish the shape of the event: remote, quiet, and disclosed by the Holy See rather than discovered.
