Quattro Gatti, a gin produced in Umbria, has won the top prize at the MicroLiquor Spirit Awards, a competition designed specifically for small-scale spirits producers, according to Yahoo News Canada. The award recognises the Classico expression of the gin, a terroir-driven product that reflects the botanical and agricultural character of the Umbrian landscape. The victory places a small Umbrian distillery alongside international competitors and signals the region's emergence as a centre for craft spirits production.

The MicroLiquor awards differ from mainstream spirits competitions by focusing exclusively on small producers and independent brands rather than large multinational distilleries. This framework reflects a broader shift in global spirits consumption toward artisanal, locally sourced products that emphasise terroir—the distinctive character imparted by a region's climate, soil and botanical heritage. For Umbria, a region long known for wine, olive oil and food production, the award suggests a new avenue for agricultural value-added production.

Umbria's economy has historically centred on agriculture and tourism. The region produces wine, olive oil, cereals, and the chocolate and confectionery for which Perugia is internationally recognised. Craft spirits represent a logical extension of this agricultural base: a way to capture additional value from local botanicals, grains and fruits while building brand identity around regional identity and quality. The Quattro Gatti award offers a proof of concept that international markets recognise Umbrian craft spirits as competitive with established producers elsewhere.
