EU return hubs plan puts Calabria back on migration frontline

Five European Union countries are seeking an agreement with an unnamed non-EU state to establish a "return hub" for migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected, with a target start date of January 1, a Danish minister said Friday, according to The Local Italy.

The proposal, which would see failed asylum seekers transferred to a facility outside the bloc while their removals are processed, is the latest attempt by member states to manage migration beyond their own borders. Denmark's minister confirmed the group of five nations is in talks with a partner country, though no name was given and no deal has been signed.

For Calabria, the plan lands on a coast that has long been the first point of contact for many of those same migrants. The region's ports and beaches have received countless landings over the years, and its reception centres have often been the first stop for people whose claims would later be rejected.
