Rome's Night Tourism Test Offers Lessons for Liguria's Crowded Coast

Italian capital opens sites after dark to beat heat and crowds; Riviera watches closely

Rome is testing a new approach to summer tourism this year, opening museums, parks, archaeological sites, villas and historic residences at night to escape the heatwaves and the crowds that saturate the capital's landmarks during the day, according to France 24. The initiative, described by the broadcaster as a revolution in how the city manages its visitors, comes as much of Italy endures a second straight summer of extreme temperatures and record tourist numbers.

For Liguria, the experiment carries a direct echo. The region's Riviera towns and the Cinque Terre face the same twin pressures — daytime heat that drives visitors indoors and crowds that strain narrow streets, fragile terraces and a coastline already under environmental stress. If Rome's night-time model proves workable, coastal municipalities may look to extend opening hours at beaches, promenades and hilltop villages to spread visitor flows beyond the midday peak.

France 24 reported that the night openings are a deliberate strategy to manage the balance between tourism revenue and the quality of the experience. The same calculus applies along the Ligurian shore, where port authorities and local councils have long sought to lengthen the tourist season beyond the summer months.
