Russell Calls Red Bull the Team to Beat as Antonelli Leads the Title Chase

The Mercedes driver says his confidence is returning while trailing his own team-mate in the championship standings

George Russell and Charles Leclerc both named Red Bull as the team to beat after the first day of practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, according to BBC Formula 1. Russell also said his "confidence is back and growing" and that he "doesn't feel lost any more" as he tries to close on his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli at the top of the championship.

The two BBC items, filed a day apart, sketch a season entering its decisive phase: a leading car identified by rivals rather than by results alone, and a Mercedes garage split between a title leader and a driver recovering his form.

What the foreign coverage does not do is hand Russell the initiative. The BBC reports him chasing Antonelli's championship lead, which places the Italian-linked Mercedes driver ahead in the standings as the flyaway races begin. Russell's own framing — confidence returning, no longer lost — is the language of a driver who has spent part of the year off the pace and is now measuring himself against a team-mate rather than the field.

Red Bull's billing is the more consequential claim. When two drivers from different teams agree on the fastest package after a single practice day, it is a signal about the development race rather than a result, and the BBC presents it as exactly that — a tip, not a verdict. Practice pace in Bahrain, on a circuit that rewards traction and rear stability, has often misled before qualifying.

For the Italian end of the grid, the weekend's file is thinner than the headlines suggest. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc appears in the BBC copy only as one of the two drivers endorsing Red Bull, and no Ferrari performance claim is made. The Italian interest in this phase of the season is therefore structural: a Mercedes junior programme that has produced a championship leader, and a Ferrari team reading the same practice data as everyone else.

The next test is qualifying, where the practice picture either holds or dissolves. Until then, the honest summary from the foreign wires is that Red Bull are the benchmark by consensus, that Antonelli leads the standings, and that Russell believes he is driving better than he was.
