Ryanair said on Monday that it would raise fares by a double-digit percentage next year and launch a cost-cutting drive, in an effort to offset soaring jet fuel prices driven by the Middle East war, The Local Italy reported. The outlet carried the direction of the pricing move and its rough size, but no route-by-route breakdown.
Lombardy is where that announcement turns into a fare. Ryanair has long been one of the largest carriers at the airports serving the region, Malpensa and Bergamo's Orio al Serio, and a double-digit rise next year would reach business travellers, the exporting firms that pay for them, and the visitors who come for Milan's trade fairs, design weeks and the lakes.
The report attaches no figure to the fuel bill, no indication of when in the year fares move, and no word on whether capacity on Italian routes will change. Double-digit is the only magnitude on offer.
