Ryanair winter flight cuts threaten Umbria's fragile tourism links

Ryanair said Wednesday that it would reduce its winter schedule in Europe as the Irish no-frills airline and other carriers come up against higher fuel costs caused by the US-Iran war, according to The Local Italy. The cuts, which will take effect in the coming months, are expected to hit secondary airports and regional routes hardest, as airlines concentrate their reduced capacity on profitable mainline connections.

For Umbria, the announcement is a worrying sign. The region's airport at Perugia, which Ryanair has served with a handful of routes in recent years, is precisely the kind of secondary hub that tends to lose out when carriers trim schedules. The airport has been a lifeline for the region's tourism industry, which draws visitors to Assisi, Spoleto and the hill towns that punctuate the landscape between Rome and Florence.

The Local Italy reported that the cuts are a direct consequence of the conflict between the US and Iran, which has pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher. Ryanair, known for its aggressive cost control, said it would prioritize routes with the strongest demand, leaving thinner routes vulnerable to suspension.
