Spain announced Friday it will introduce temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, retaliating for Rome's one-month suspension of the Schengen free-travel agreement imposed after a mass rush of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The move came after Madrid gave Rome until Sunday to lift the controls, according to the Guardian and France 24.

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has said it will not take orders from Spain and will continue its temporary suspension of Schengen until at least Aug. 15, Politico Europe reported. The rare public spat between two EU member states follows an influx of about 78,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta, a deadly rush that has strained the bloc's migration consensus.
