Schengen Row Hits Trieste as Spain Retaliates Against Italy

Spain announced Friday it will introduce temporary border checks on visitors from Italy, retaliating after Rome imposed similar measures following a mass rush of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The rare spat between EU nations escalates a dispute over the Schengen free-travel agreement, with Madrid giving Rome until Sunday to lift its controls.

The checks come as Italy's government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, says it will continue its temporary suspension of Schengen until at least Aug. 15. Politico Europe reported that Rome rejects Madrid's ultimatum, deepening a rift that threatens to fragment the bloc's passport-free zone.

For Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the row carries immediate weight. The region's capital, Trieste, sits at Italy's eastern border with Slovenia, a gateway for Balkan and Central European trade. Any reciprocal tightening of controls could slow the flow of goods through the Port of Trieste, one of the country's key logistics hubs.
