Germany and Italy are sweltering under a heatwave that has broken temperature records across Europe, according to The Guardian and The Local Italy. At least 193 million people across the continent are expected to experience temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, with the weather system spreading eastward from Western Europe. Italy remains under multiple red heat alerts as the heatwave intensifies.
Campania and the broader Mezzogiorno face particular vulnerability to extreme heat. The region's tourism infrastructure, already stressed by record visitor numbers, must now contend with cooling demands from hotels, museums and archaeological sites. Pompeii and Herculaneum, which draw tens of thousands of daily visitors during summer, face pressure to maintain climate control for both tourists and the preservation of ancient structures. Naples's port operations and the region's agricultural sector—centred on mozzarella production and San Marzano tomato cultivation—are also at risk from sustained high temperatures.
