Spain's border checks on Italy reach Calabria's ports

Spain on Saturday imposed temporary border checks on travelers arriving from Italy, escalating a dispute between the EU partners over migration, according to France 24 and Le Monde.

The move follows Italy's decision to impose similar controls after more than 70,000 migrants crossed into Spain's Ceuta enclave from Morocco, most of whom later returned. Spain's checks will apply to flights and ships from Italy from midnight on Saturday until September 7, Le Monde reported.

For Calabria, the timing could not be worse. The region's ports, including Gioia Tauro and Reggio Calabria, are busy summer gateways for ferries and cargo, and any additional friction at the border threatens to disrupt the flow of passengers and goods.
