Spain's border checks on Italy reach Friuli's airports and rail links

Spain on Saturday introduced temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, escalating a dispute between the two EU partners over migration, France 24 reported. The move follows Italy's decision to impose similar controls after more than 70,000 migrants crossed into Spain's Ceuta enclave from Morocco, most of whom later returned.

The checks, which run from midnight Saturday until September 7, apply to flights and ships from Italy, according to Le Monde. Spain had warned Italy it would impose entry checks unless Rome halted its controls by Sunday, Deutsche Welle reported.

For Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the controls add friction to a summer travel season already strained by the heatwave. Trieste's airport and the region's rail links to Austria and Slovenia — key gateways for Central European tourists heading to the Adriatic — now face additional document checks for those continuing to Spain.
