Spain's border checks on Italy snarl Milan's summer travel

Spain has begun imposing temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, escalating a dispute between the two EU partners over migration that is now spilling into the summer travel plans of thousands of Italians, including those departing from Milan's airports. The move follows Italy's decision to impose similar controls after a surge of more than 70,000 migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on July 30–31, according to France 24. Italy's foreign minister has called the Spanish decision "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable," as reported by the Guardian.

For Lombardy, the checks could not come at a worse time. Milan's Malpensa and Linate airports are major gateways for both leisure and business travel to Spain, a top summer destination for Italians and a key market for the region's fashion and design industries. The new controls mean longer queues and potential delays for travellers, adding friction to journeys that were previously seamless under the Schengen open-border agreement.

The European Union has sought to downplay the impact, saying the tit-for-tat restrictions are temporary and will have no lasting impact on the Schengen zone, according to France 24. However, for the thousands of passengers passing through Lombardy's transport hubs this August, the practical consequences are immediate: passport checks, longer waiting times, and the risk of missed connections.
