Spain's border checks on Italy threaten Milan's summer travel economy

Spain announced Friday it will introduce temporary border checks on visitors arriving from Italy, in retaliation for Rome's suspension of Schengen free movement after a deadly mass rush of migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, according to the Guardian and France 24.

The move comes after Italy imposed its own controls following an influx of about 78,000 people from Morocco into Ceuta, a crisis that has left up to 5,000 migrants still in the city and a death toll of at least 100, the BBC and the Guardian reported.

The Spanish government has given Rome until Sunday to restore passport-free travel, with Politico Europe reporting that Madrid warned of countermeasures if Italy does not lift its one-month suspension of the Schengen agreement.
