Spain's border checks on Italy deepen EU rift over Ceuta

Spain announced on Friday that it will introduce temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, retaliating against Rome's decision to suspend parts of the Schengen free-travel agreement after a mass rush of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The Guardian reported that the checks come amid a rare public spat between two EU member states, triggered by what France 24 described as an unprecedented and deadly crossing of tens of thousands of people from Morocco into Spain's North African territory.

The Italian government had imposed its own controls following an influx of about 78,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta, according to the BBC. Spain's interior ministry gave Rome until Sunday to restore passport-free travel, Politico Europe reported, warning of countermeasures if the one-month suspension remained in place. Italy, however, has rejected the ultimatum, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government saying it will continue its temporary suspension of Schengen until at least August 15.

The dispute is notable because the two countries do not share a land border, as Deutsche Welle observed, making the reciprocal checks a largely symbolic yet politically charged escalation. The European Commission has been drawn into the row, with officials repeatedly questioned about last week's events in Ceuta and reports of social media calls for another attempt to overwhelm the border, the Guardian's Europe live blog noted.
