Spain's border checks on Italy ripple through Marche's summer economy

Spain announced Friday it will introduce temporary border checks on visitors arriving from Italy, in direct retaliation for Rome imposing similar measures after a mass rush of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The rare diplomatic spat between two European Union members has escalated quickly, with Madrid warning it would act unless Rome halts its controls by Sunday, according to the Guardian and France 24.

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has rejected the ultimatum, saying it will continue its temporary suspension of the Schengen free-travel agreement until at least August 15. Politico Europe reported that Rome's position is firm, despite Spain's threat of countermeasures that now include entry checks on Italian passport holders.

The dispute stems from an unprecedented rush of about 78,000 people from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast. The BBC reported that Italy introduced its border controls in response to that influx, a move that has now triggered a cycle of retaliatory measures between the two Mediterranean neighbours.
