Spain-Italy border spat hits Rome's summer travel

Spain has introduced temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, retaliating against similar controls Rome imposed after a surge of migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta. The Italian foreign minister called Madrid's decision "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable," according to The Guardian, as the dispute escalates between the two EU partners.

The checks, which began Saturday, are part of a tit-for-tat row that has exposed the fragility of Europe's Schengen free-travel area. The capital is a major transit hub for travellers moving between Italy and Spain, and the new controls threaten to snarl journeys at airports and ports just as the city hosts its peak tourist influx. The EU has sought to downplay the impact, with France 24 reporting that Brussels considers the restrictions temporary and unlikely to have a lasting effect on the Schengen zone.
