Spain's Border Checks Threaten Venice's Summer of Visitors

Spain announced on Friday that it will introduce temporary border checks on visitors arriving from Italy, in retaliation for Rome's decision to impose similar measures after a mass rush of people from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The Guardian reported that the checks come "amid" a rare dispute between the two European Union members, which do not share a land border.

The move follows Italy's one-month suspension of the Schengen free-travel agreement, which Rome says it will continue until at least August 15. According to Politico Europe, the Italian government has said it "won't take orders from Spain" on the matter, rejecting Madrid's ultimatum to restore passport-free travel by Sunday.

For Venice, a city whose economy depends on the seamless movement of millions of international visitors each summer, the dispute carries an uncomfortable weight. The lagoon city is a gateway for travellers who often combine Italy with Spain on a single European itinerary, and any friction at the border complicates what has long been marketed as frictionless travel.
