Spain-Italy border spat threatens Ligurian port traffic

Spain has announced it will introduce temporary border checks on visitors from Italy, in response to Rome imposing similar measures after a mass rush of people from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, according to the Guardian. The checks come amid a rare diplomatic spat between two EU member states over the suspension of the Schengen free-travel agreement.

The BBC reported that Italy introduced its border controls following an influx of about 78,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta. France 24 described the move as an unprecedented, deadly rush, with the death toll now put at least 100 people, according to Ceuta's president, Juan Jesús Vivas, as reported by the Guardian.

For Liguria, the dispute is not merely a matter of passport queues. The region's ports — Genoa first among them — are a primary gateway for Mediterranean shipping and freight, and any disruption to cross-border passenger and commercial traffic could have knock-on effects on logistics chains that move goods between Italy, Spain and beyond.
