Spanish Border Checks Reach Abruzzo's Summer Travel

Spain on Saturday began imposing border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, a retaliatory step in an escalating dispute between the two EU partners over migration, according to the BBC and France 24. The move follows Italy's decision to impose similar controls on travellers from Spain after a surge of migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on July 30-31, with the BBC reporting an influx of about 78,000 people.

The European Commission has sought to contain the fallout, with the EU's tech chief calling on Meta and TikTok to "act decisively" to stem disinformation at times of crisis following last week's Ceuta surge, The Local Italy reported. France 24 noted the EU says the tit-for-tat restrictions are temporary and will have no lasting impact on the Schengen zone, though Politico Europe described the clash between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Italy's Prime Minister as exposing the fragility of Europe's free-travel area.

For Abruzzo, a region that depends heavily on summer tourism from across Europe, the checks add a layer of friction to an already strained travel season. The region's inland villages and Adriatic coast draw visitors who now face the prospect of passport queues and potential delays at airports and ferry terminals, a consequence the foreign press has documented for Italian travellers generally.
