Thousands of demonstrators marched through Rome on Friday in a general strike called by the left-wing Unione Sindacale di Base, according to Euronews, one of a series of processions held across the country over the cost of living.
France 24 reported that the protests were directed at rising living costs, cuts to education funding and government spending on defence, and that minor clashes broke out in the north-western city of Turin while police maintained a heavy presence nationwide. The broadcaster carried the slogan "Let's reclaim our future" as the demonstrators' own.
The Local reported that students and workers joined the marches, calling for more school funding and relief from the soaring cost of living, with security deployed to avert possible confrontations.
