Tunisia Boat Sinking Kills Eight as Migrant Crossings to Italy Continue

A migrant boat carrying 15 Tunisians sank off the country's southeastern coast while heading to Italy, killing eight, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday. The incident has sparked protests in Tunisia, according to the news outlet, as frustration grows over the deadly crossings that continue to claim lives in the central Mediterranean.

The sinking is the latest in a long series of tragedies on a route that leads directly toward the Italian island of Lampedusa, which lies some 145 kilometres from the Tunisian coast. Le Monde reported separately that Tunisia has recovered the drowned bodies of 11 migrants, underscoring the persistent danger of the crossing.

For Italy, the central Mediterranean remains the primary frontier for migration, with Tunisia serving as a key departure point. The deaths come as the Italian government continues to grapple with how to manage arrivals and prevent further loss of life on the sea.
