Italy is facing a late-summer surge in West Nile virus infections, with health officials reporting a spike in cases at the end of August, according to The Local Italy. The mosquito-borne disease, which has historically been concentrated in the northern Po Valley, is now being detected in areas further south, raising concerns for regions less accustomed to managing outbreaks.
For Molise, the smallest and one of the most sparsely populated regions in Italy, the spread of West Nile virus adds a new dimension to public health challenges. With a population of roughly 289,000 spread across a largely rural interior, the region's health infrastructure is thin, and mosquito surveillance has traditionally been a lower priority than in the floodplain provinces of the north.
