Countries across Europe continued to battle wildfires on Sunday amid blistering temperatures and tinder-dry landscapes, according to The Local Italy. The blazes, which have become a recurring feature of recent summers, are straining emergency services and threatening rural communities from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans.
The fires come as Europe endures a scorching summer that has disrupted travel, forced the closure of infrastructure and taken an economic toll on tourism and productivity, the Guardian reported. Low river levels have stalled freight traffic in Germany and forced the shutdown of nuclear plants in France, while southern regions face the twin pressures of heat and drought.
For Sardinia, the situation is acutely familiar. The island, which has experienced devastating wildfires in recent years, shares the Mediterranean's vulnerability to climate stress. A prolonged dry spell has left vegetation tinder-dry, and the windy conditions that characterise the island can turn a small spark into an uncontrollable blaze, a pattern documented in international coverage of southern Europe's fire seasons.
