Wildfires swept across southern Europe on Wednesday, killing three firefighters and forcing thousands to evacuate as extreme heat and dry conditions fuelled blazes in Sicily, southwestern France and central Spain, according to France 24 and Le Monde. Rescue teams battled dozens of fires amid warnings over increasingly severe weather events.

The firefighter deaths in France and Spain represent the human cost of fires that international observers describe as increasingly severe and difficult to contain. France 24 reported that the blazes have reignited long-standing concerns about the adequacy of fire suppression infrastructure and the speed at which modern fires spread under extreme heat conditions.

Le Monde noted that the fires across southern Europe are part of a pattern of extreme weather events intensifying faster than anywhere else on the planet.
